Chief Executive

Adult Dyslexia Organisation Website Briefing for designers

The purpose of this document is to outline the brief for ADO’s website and also to provide the brief for the Ufi/ learndirect dyslexia website and the dyslexia and civil service website for the Cabinet Office. The information will be provided in the order of priority.

Priority 1:

Ufi/learndirect dyslexia website http://www.ufi.com/dyslexia

The website content is to be updated with the information provided by ADO. This is to be completed in January if possible;

• The graphics are to stay the same visually apart from new images to be added within the page that reflects multicultural society (spare images may be available from Ufi)
• The flow charts need to be introduced in keeping with the current guide on the website
• A pdf file version of the guide would have to be created and made available on the website and possibly a word version
• The website should have a link to the ADO website shop.
• The website will be hosted by Ufi and cannot be accessed externally for updating once it is live.

This would all have to be in keeping with the current accessibility features within the Dyslexia Ufi website. I would regard this as the minimum requirement from Ufi for updating the website and would like to see it coasted accordingly.

I would appreciate it if you could do a second costing which would include the following features to take the website up to the more advanced standards of accessibility which will be in keeping with ADO’s ‘Dyslexia Friendly-User Friendly Campaign’.

• The website should have read back facility which doesn’t require the user to download and read in English speaking voice (male/female speaking voice optional).
• The website should have the ability to change colour background based on the RNIB colours combined with the ADO colours.
• The website should have a choice of fonts, font sizes and a change of colour font (see Peter Ranger’s paper).
• The website should aim to meet the W3C standards as well as the PAS 78 of the British Standards Agency.(see ADO’s style guide)
• The website should include Claro Software Ltd’s toolbar if possible which would then allow all the above features and include their screen magnifier as a solution (or will consider other options)
• The website should have a link to the ADO website shop.

There are three documents that should be considered when looking at designing accessible websites for dyslexia. The first one is the recent research from City University by Areej Ai-Wabil, the second one is from Bunnyfoot and Jon Dodd their paper on web accessibility and dyslexia and finally TechDis and the work Peter Ranger did for them and for the ADO.
The overall goal is to design websites that are intuitive and inclusive to the people with a disability and in this case dyslexia comes first. Therefore the accessibility features need to be in the forefront of the website.
Priority 2:
Dyslexia Civil Service Website http://www.civilservice.gov.uk/iam/diversity/toolkits/Dyslexia/index.asp
This website needs to be built from scratch and can be designed on the principle of ADO’s website. The content is based on the guide we have written for the Civil Service and the public sector about dyslexia.
• The website will be hosted by the Cabinet Office and cannot be accessed externally for updating once it is live
• The website should have a link to the ADO website shop.
• The different sections will have to be colour coded.
• The website should have visually active buttons.
• The default colour for the background is cream the font is Ariel 12 point as default
• The website should be able to expand to fill the screen
• The website should include Claro Software Ltd’s toolbar if possible which would then allow all the above features and include their screen magnifier as a solution (or will consider other options)
• The website content is to be updated with the information provided by ADO
• A pdf file version of the guide would have to be created and made available on the website and possibly a word version
• The website should include the facility for focus groups
• The website should include events/diary
• The website design should be based on the Civil Service website with a more modern look and reflect the fact that we are a user led organisation in a multicultural society.
• Images should reflect people working in basic jobs in the public sector to the higher jobs in the Civil Service (see Jo Todd’s Dyslexia Toolkit on the Civil Service website).
• Website search facilities should include an A-Z, a Google search engine, and a site map.
The website needs to be in place by February 8th to be launched at the Dyslexia and Civil Service Conference in London. We will need to discuss further the content headings once you have received the content.
Priority 3
Adult Dyslexia Organisation Website www.adult-dyslexia.org
This website is to be at the heart of the ADO’s Dyslexia Friendly-User Friendly Campaign. One of the elements is to get all websites to have read back, change of colour background and fonts as the standard feature of the website. We aim to encourage people to think about making their website accessible for the next five to ten years rather than just meeting the present minimum standards.
• The different sections will have to be colour coded.
• The website should have visually active buttons.
• The website should have a choice of fonts; font sizes and a change of colour font (see Peter Ranger’s paper).
• The website should aim to meet the W3C standards as well as the PAS 78 of the British Standards Agency.(see ADO’s style guide)
• The website should include the facility for focus groups
• The website should include events/diary
• Website search facilities should include an A-Z, a predictive Google search engine, and a site map.
• The different sections will have to be colour coded, the website should have visually active buttons.
• The website should have read back facility which doesn’t require the user to download and read in English speaking voice (male/female speaking voice optional).
• The website should have the ability to change colour background based on the RNIB colours combined with the ADO colours.
• The website is to include graphics that are to stay the same visually apart from new images to be added within the page that reflects multicultural society (spare images may be available from Ufi)
• The website design should be based on the ADO website www.adult-dyslexia.org with a more modern look and reflect the fact that we are a user led organisation in a multicultural society.
• The shop is to be a combination between The Dyslexia Shop http://www.thedyslexiashop.co.uk/ and the Microlink shop which was produced for the British Dyslexia Association http://www.bdastore.org.uk/ . The content for the shop will be the same as the resources listed in the Ufi Guide, Civil Service Guide, Prison Guide and we will be discussing development of it with the Access to Work Team.
• The overall aim of this site is to lead by example and to be an award winning website. Once the website is up and running we can maximise our efforts in driving our accessibility campaign. We anticipate there will a high demand for our services in terms of consultation and web design. Finally I’ll be sending you a range of documents to support the above website.
The overall goal is to design websites that are intuitive and inclusive to the people with a disability and in this case dyslexia comes first. Therefore the accessibility features need to be at the front of the website.
