6.2 Ensure that equivalents for dynamic content are updated when the dynamic content changes.

Make dynamic content accessible

We will assume the phrase 'dynamic content' to mean, anything updated in real time (e.g. stock ticker, video, sound) or anything that changes over time. If such content changes, any accessible equivalents provided should also be changed.

For example, if the customer satisfaction Pie Chart on the tutorial site changed to reflect the results from a new survey, the text of the page pointed to by the longdesc attribute should be also be updated.

Other examples

  • If a different banner advert is served each time a user visits a site, the alt attribute should change to reflect the content of the Banner.
  • The noscript element should be updated if the results of the script it relates to changes.
  • Update the title attribute of frames when the content of the frames pointed to changes.
  • Content pointed to by frames should always be an html page and not some other media such as an image. It is not possible to add an alternative label to an image used as the target of a frame element.
  • Scrolling text showing stock prices or other constantly changing information.
  • When text-only equivalent pages are provided, the text only pages should be updated at the same time as the primary content.

You have to use your judgement when applying this guideline, e.g., Kynn Bartlett of the company Idyll Mountain has a webcam in his office; when he is in his office he is visible via the webcam, but at other times it is shows his empty office. Should the alt attribute be updated - each time Kynn leaves his office - even if just to put the kettle on? www.idyllmtn.com/papers/suny2000/check05.html
