GAWDS Participate in British Standards Review Panel to Improve Web Access
Added on Thursday 2 Jun 2005
A year ago the Disability Rights Commission launched their formal report into the accessibility of 1000 UK websites - finding that 81% failed to meet even basic accessibility standards.
As a direct result of the report, the DRC commissioned the British Standards Institution (BSI) to produce a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) - to provide guidance for those commissioning and developing websites.
GAWDS member and representative Mel Pedley is part of the the Review Panel, consisting of Web development experts and user groups, studying the first draft of the PAS. The guidance is expected to be available in late summer 2005 and launched at a national coference in Autumn 2005.
The guidance is likely to be aimed at large and small service providers, website commissioners and developers.
