What I enjoy most is helping businesses make the most of the Web. This starts with having an effective website, something which requires a broad range of skills and experience to achieve fully - there's the huge variety of people's needs and capabilities, those of machines (screenreaders and search engines) and mobiles, increasingly. My contribution draws on my business and technical training and experience (C.Eng., BSc (Hons), MBA) and is concentrated in the management, business effectiveness, usability and Web development aspects of a project. Others such as a Web copy writer, specialist Web developer, or graphic designer contribute if appropriate to the project. A PC user since the early 1980s, I was for some years responsible for a 14-strong commercial department's specialised IT needs (estimating system, MS Office templates, network security software, training). I now concentrate on (X)HTML, CSS, PHP (5 and OOP), MySQL, RSS (XML) plus Windows, Mac, and Apache Web server issues as necessary to increase the capabilities of websites. I work to Web standards, unless there are compelling reasons not to, with table-less designs which I test X-browser. I speak French.
