Personal Profile:
I am co-founder and MD of ilikecake limited. My original Degree is in Science from National University of Ireland Maynooth in Co Kildare Ireland where I graduated with Distinction and attained first place in my Degree year. Following this I went to work for 2 years in the Neuro-Psychiatric Genetic Laboratories in Trinity College Dublin.
I then took up a job for 5 years teaching website design and multimedia in Ballyfermot College of Further Education.
In September 2004 I took a years sabbatical and went to Napier University in Edinburgh to undertake and successfully complete a Masters with Distinction in Interactive Technologies for E-Commerce.
As part of my Masters I completed a dissertation titled “A Comparative Investigation of the Accessibility Levels of Irish Websites” which can be found on the company website http://www.ilikecake.net/docs/A_Comparative_Investigation_of_the_Accessibility_Levels_of_Irish_Websites.doc. This dissertation follows on from the WARP study by Dr Barry McMullen of DCU and charts the improvement in the accessibility of 152 Irish websites. Overall I obtained a D3 (85-90%) in this with my Viva obtaining a D5 (95%+)
This is the biggest and most recent study of its type in Ireland. Ilikecake limited is in the process of publishing white papers on the dissertation topic for presentation at Conferences.
Since the completion of my Masters I have continued to teach. My role in ilikecake is firstly a technical accessibility developer and a designer. I also do consultancy work in the area of accessible website design and Accessibility Auditing.
I am a member of IRL-DeAN the Irish design for all eAccessibility network. I am also on the National Disability Authorities List of Accessibility Consultants (Ireland)
[Aside: Just wondering why you cannot be both a designer/developer AND an advocate/campaigner :)]
